Gloomy or Glam: Genres, Trends and Particularities in New Polish Cinema (after 2005)

Polish cinema is often seen as dark, depressing, and often cryptic with its focus on history. Yet, Martin Scorsese says, “Humour and tragedy are very close in Polish cinema”. Since the political transformation of 1989 Polish cinema has become more transnational and liberated, which is remarkable especially after the installation on the new law regulating the film industry in 2005. What is Poland like in these new visions? What fascinates the young filmmakers and photographers? What the audience is most likely to appreciate? This presentation will identify some of the leading tendencies in new Polish cinema after 2005.
