“Inventing the Woman Poet: Voloshin’s and Dmitrieva’s Cherubina de Gabriak Mystification”

Abstract:
This talk studies prevailing constructs of the woman poet as they are manifested in Maksimilian Voloshin’s and Elizaveta Dmitrieva’s invention of Cherubina de Gabriak, a fictional poet who took literary St. Petersburg by storm in 1910. My examination of this episode in Russian cultural history embraces de Gabriak’s image, poetry, and reception, together with how the mystification was subsequently construed.
